Will Packing Bruise With Ice Cause Further Damage?

Age: 29, weight: Hello. I slipped and fell on a flight of about ten stairs seven days ago. They were carpeted stairs, but I fell with all my weight about two inches below my right elbow. Immediately there was a bruising and a little selling but two hours afterward it looked as if half a baseball (no exaggeration) was protruding from my arm. I wrapped it after putting ice on it hoping it would keep the sweeping from getting worse. It helped with the sweeping and I continued to ice it on and off for the next 24 hours. Now, the bruise has gotten to be a dark purple and blue and has wrapped around the outside of my arm and around my elbow. The swollen knot is still there as a hard, tender place under my skin. It is white above the knot -- not bruised at all. The area around it is severely bruised as I said before. There is no problem with movement, however it aches when I rest my arm on something and pull it away. Today, it is beginning to ache even more. Do you think I have I done something of a serious nature to my arm?

Hi,

You did the right thing by putting ice on it but at the same time a possibility of fracture should have been ruled out since you mentioned great amount of swelling. I would recommend you to get an X-ray just to be double sure. The ice works well for 48 hours after the injury, since it has been 7 days it's not going to effect now so you can stop it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
