Will Depakote And Abilify Treat Bipolar Manic Episodes?
Our son is experiencing his third bipolar manic episode in three years, these last two in January. We ve brought him home from college to get a blood test ordered by his home psychiatrist who two weeks ago prescribed 1000mg of depakote. Now he is adding 5mg Abilify, and I m wondering what we can expect. I was shocked this manic episode occurred while he was medicated. But hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I ve spent the last week with him in his college town, there if he needed me, adjusting to this second semester. (He was a 4.0 student first semester.) I feel lost.

Control of manic episode depends upon dose of drugs. Usually dose of depakote should be 20 to 50mg per kg. In his case, if dose is less according to weight, then chances of relapse will increase. I am sorry to learn about your son's illness. Depakote 1000 mg is extremely effective and abilify 5 mg a very good addition. You should expect gradual symptom reduction in 2-3 weeks but you must continue on medications ,even after there are no symptoms , to stop further episodes,as far as possible.
