Why My Mother S Legs Are Swollen?

My 89 year old mom had a partial hip replacement on September 11th. Her legs are very swollen. In 4 weeks they do not seem to be improving. Normal? Will they ever loose the swelling? What kind of time frame and is there something we should do to help loose the swelling.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Swelling 4 weeks after partial hip replacement is not normal. First cause we think is Deep Vein thrombosis- So I would suggest that you get colour doppler of her operated leg to assess for Deep Vein Thrombosis. The treatment is generally anticoagulants.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Gopal Goel,
