Why Loose Motions Are Reoccurring In Infant After Stopping Antibiotics?

Hi Doctor, My 8 Month old son is suffering of loose motion since 3 months. Since beginning he has been prescribed with different antibiotic each time for a week. ( Norflox 100mg, Zifi, office 50 etc) along with tonics like (z&D, rinifol, Ascalyne). We have observed that every time we give him antibiotic for 3-4 days, the frequency of loose motion goes down and once the 7days course is completed , loose motion seems to be almost gone. However, after completing zinc tonics (which were prescribed for 10-15 days) , he again starts having loose motion. Every time we did the stool routine and doctor found that there is some infection in his stomach, however we are not being told about the cause of the same. Kindly note, as per doctors advise, we have started giving him boiled water, never gave bottled milk, using sterilized spoon and bowl to feed him. Still he develops infection just after completing Antibiotic and zinc tonic course. Below are the details. 1) Weight at the time of birth : 3.3 kgs 2) Weight at 8.5 months : 8.4kgs 3) In last 1.5 months, he has developed 3 teeth. Kindly suggest suitable cause for the infection and related treatment.Regards,samir.

As he is in recovery phase of disease there may be persistent synptoms.

Diarrhoea in children is usually self limiting. It requires supportive care by maintaining nutrition and hydration.

I would suggest the following

1. Home made Oral rehydration solution: To a glass of boiled and cooled water add 20 gms or glucose or sucrose(Sugar) and a pinch of common table salt. Feed the child as much as possible. Alternate with Tender Coconut water
2. Maintain Nutrition: Dhal water, wheat porridge, rice water

Consult Physician when you notice following red signs
1. Dry oral mucosa which implies dehdration
2. Absence of tears while crying
3. Blood/mucous in stools
4. Irritability
5. Decreased movements and excessive sleepiness
In case you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Wishing you happy and healthy life

Take Care
