Why Do Doctors Test For The Knee Jerk Reflex?

Is it possible for a MD to perform a petallar reflex wrong? Two of my doctors did a knee reflex and noticed hyper-reflex with clonus, but the neurologist said that the reflex was performed incorrectly because it was percussed more on the side below the knee cap would that make a difference?
