Why Am I Experiencing Pain In My Leg After An Arthroscopy?

Hi I had an arthroscopy approximately 7 weeks ago and about 3 weeks ago started to experience pain on the outside of my leg just below the knee. It is a very debilitating pain as I cannot stand or sit for very long without experiencing pain. I cannot lie flat or lie on that side either without experiencing pain. I have tried ice packs, raising the leg above heart level, all forms of painkillers and anti-inflammatories, gentle stretching as advised by my physio yet after almost 4 weeks the pain is just as intense. I have lost quality of life and really would like to know what is going on. Can someone help or advise please.

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
I suspect the pain is not to be due to just an arthroscopy procedure.
You have not mentioned what for the arthroscopy is done?
Whether the procedure is combined with any surgery?

The pain may be due the pre existing condition for which you have done arthroscopy.
Some times the arthroscopy may aggravate the previous inflammation and pain as like other normal invasive procedure.

If the surgery is done through arthroscopy, it is usual to have the pain for about 6 to 8 weeks.
You must avoid any weight lifting and strenous exercises.
If you resume to your work soon, the probability of chronicity of the inflammation is high and the problem some times become permanent.

Please follow your orthopedician and physiotherapist advice.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
