What To Do For Asthma In Child?

My son is 7 years old now, he has asthma since he was 3 earlier he used to have frequent attacks so doctor put him on budecort 200 twice daily, but we used to reduce the dose according to the seasons. last year he had no attacks we reduced the dose to 200 once. He was not troubled with the morning allergies of cough and sneezing. Since last 3 months we have stopped giving budecort. now , he is troubled everyday with morning allergies and he caughts cold and cough frequently due to which we have to give asthalin when he coughs ( but not so severe as earlier). He misses his school frequently and gets wheezing sound after he laughs or vomits. Doctor prescribes him montelukast for 10 days when he caught cold. Dr. says if he caught cold or cough next time he will again start with budecort or montelukast( 3 months). I would like to ask which would be better and which have minimum side effect. Is he getting the right treatment?

Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic. Greetings from Chennai.

By what you quote I feel what your son is having is asthma - severe persistent. Please don't feel that I am being blunt, but rather than using frequent steroids it is better to have a label (severe persistent asthma) and follow up with simpler alternatives than using steroids which are associated with complications.

I have a few questions and suggestions for you -
Questions:
1. How many days per month does he cough or feel breathless?
2. How many nights per month does his sleep get disturbed due to above symptoms?
3. Does he feel breathless when he runs around or plays with other kids?
4. Are the symptoms when there are seasonal changes?
5. Is there any family history of asthma or any other sort of allergies like skin allergy etc.?

Suggestions:
1. Inhalers are the newest and best management strategies for this. only thing is, I suggest using Foracort than Budecort as it is sever persistent asthma.

2. Triggers can be environmental changes/ dust/ talcum powder/ seasonal changes/ un-cleaned a/c vents/ cold weather etc....we can specifically say this is the cause - unless we observe the kid closely - best person is the parent.

3. Try to avoid the trigger which you have noted are precipitating the attack in him.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.
