What Should I Do With The Headaches In Night?

Hi I am a 49 yo female with Spina Bifida L5. No hydrocephaly. No shunt. Last 3 days have been experiencing headaches worse at night and when I lay down with a wooshing sound in my ears from arteries in my neck. I have a dr. appt. in 2 days. Is this serious enough to go to urgent care?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Postural headaches are not uncommon in your type of pathology. The symptoms you refer of the sounds of turbulence you hear are not generally reflective of any impending danger. I doubt they will be able to resolve the headaches in the ER so for that reason I would suggest seeing a neurologist or headache specialist as opposed to a general physician or internist for that matter since your symptoms I believe are slightly more advanced than what a non-neurologist would feel comfortable handling directly. I also wouldn't go for a shunt at this point either without further information and proper studies.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
