What Precautions Must Be Taken For Hypothyroidism?

Hello Dr. Manoranjan, I am a 23 year old female witha problem of hypothyrodism. Please suggest me precaution to be taken on daily basis. Currently i am taking 50mg of thyronorm daily. The problem that i have is i keep gaining weight alot. My initila weight was 60 but now i have reached 72kg in one year. please advise

It is a common misunderstanding that Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) causes weight gain. The weight gain due to underactive thyroid is generally minimal and in the tune of 1 to 2 kg. I would suggest we should look for other causes of weight gain and consider diet and excercise for weight loss instead of blaming ot on thyroid alone.

As far as your thyroid problem is concerned, I would advice you to get a Free T4 and TSH checked and revert back with the report.
