Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, during a visit to my family doctor, he noticed that my throat is narrow. He then asked if I snored, and I said yes. He said that if the throat gets narrower, I could lose sufficient oxygen to the head. He didn t tell me why my throat is getting narrow. Could you please tell me possible causes for the throat to get narrower? He only told me to do a sleep apnea test. I am middle aged male. Thanks very much.
The throat gets narrowed down in the following conditions: 1) Bilateral enlarged tonsils 2) Neck obesity or fatty neck leading to compression of throat area 3) Tumors or scar tissue due to gastroesophageal reflux 4) Tumors at the base of the tongue 5) Salivary gland tumors
You need to be examined thoroughly for the above causes and evaluated. It's better you take a sleep apnea test and consult a physician after that. You don't need to panic as it is treatable condition. Weight loss significantly helps in decreasing snoring and apneic spells during sleep.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
