What Is The Uncomfortable Sensation On The Left Side Of My Belly?

I began to feel a sensation on the left side of my belly an inch or so below my rib cage(maybe the slean area) over a year ago. It wasn t quite pain but more of a discomfort. It went away and has returned several times since then but recently it has returned and has become much more uncomfortable and I think that I need to a Doctor to see what the issue is. My question is should I first see a general practioner to diagnose my condition or should I just see a gastrointerologist?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of sensation on the left side of belly, an inch or so below rib cage over a year ago - more of a discomfort, went away to return several times but is more uncomfortable now, Wants to know whether to see the GP or a Gastroenterologist...
I would advise you to see the GP first as you will take so much time to get an appointment of a Gastroenterologist.
The most probable cause can be a problem with the rectus sheath, some inflamed muscles in the close cavity of the rectus sheath or may be a hernia and so on.
A proper clinical evaluation and examination by a GP and thence by a General Surgeon might give us the best possible diagnosis that may need a confirmation by a high resolution ultrasound or CT scan to get the plan of management.
