Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi, in this case i feel that since the tendons are significantly retracted, hence it may be very difficulty to repair it surgically.
2 options available are:
1) conservative- with exercises which will strengthen the remaining muscles and gradually with the pain subsiding , he may be able to lead a normal life.

2) Surgical- The only option available is surgical reconstruction of the tendons by using other tendon grafts.
