What Is The Treatment For Filariasis? Is Diethylcarbamazine Available In Market?

Is the drug Diethylcarbamazine (DEC): available in Mumbai, India and are you able to purchase the drug from the Pharmacy. Does it help to reduce the pain and swelling as my father has Falaria and is in a lot of pain for the past 25 years. Is there a cure as he is 85 years old.

Please e-mail me at YYYY@YYYY and let me know the treatment for elephant leg and how can it be cured. Are the drugs available in Mumbai. Which doctor can he be refered to? How expensive are these drugs and how long does he need to take the medication.

Thanks,

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
Your father is having elephantiasis which occurs due to presence of microscopic, thread-like parasitic worms such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and B. timori, all of which are transmitted by mosquitoes.
He is having it for 25 years it is chronic and lymphatic obstruction occurs I don't know it is reversible or not, but Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) by the name of Hetrazan now a days required very less frequently.
You can try to find in mumbai it should be available.
Please consult a infectious disease expert and surgeon if they can help.
Even course of some antibiotics are like Doxycycline are effective but first visit Physician.
Please keep the limb very clean and take care.
Good Luck.
