What Is The Treatment For An Expanding Alopecia Spot On My Chin (beard)?
Hey,
I have a sort of alopecia spot on my chin (beard) and it is really frustrating me. It expands starting by decolorizing the surrounded hair and slowly inhibiting the growth. I have been using minoxidil 5% for about few weeks and nothing has changed. Also, I used a herbal remedy that regained a fuzzy decolorized hair on the original spot that used to be totally bold. But the expansion that i've noticed makes me anxious. could you please tell me what is the real diagnosis of this issue and whether or not it's treatable? And could you suggest any medication that i may discuss with a dermatologist, when I get a time to arrange a visit.
Hi, Thanks for writing to us. You seem to be suffering from alopecia areata. It selectively causes shedding of pigmented hair and that's why when a bald patch develops , it may still retain gray hair. Also when regrowth starts, fine depigmented hair grow which eventually thicken and darken in color. As you are having a single expanding patch, intralesional steroid injection once in fifteen days or a month would help. In between you may apply a topical steroid along with minoxidil, tretinoin, salicylic acid solution. Please meet a dermatologist for proper evaluation and treatment. Hope this helped. Take care
