What Is The Treatment For A Lump In The Scar?

I have a 20+ year old scar that is red and pussing. It has a lump inside about the size of a small marble. I had a C-Section 23 years ago and 2 bowel obstructions shortly after that. Roughly a thimbleful of white pus has come out of the C-Section scar where it meets the obstructional scar. The lump appeared to have shrunk when the pus came out. Initially, the area was sore for a few days and then turned red and oozed all this yesterday. Today it is very sore and still has a lump in it about marble size. It is not an ingrown hair; any thoughts?

Hi,

Rarely scars can cause problems years after the surgery. Sometimes infections can occur in the layers of the skin surrounding the scar. When it forms abscess, severe pain and pus formation can occur. Obesity, diabetes, tight fittings, decreased immunity, etc. can prove infection at the old scar area.

The possible steps that can help you are:
-Consult your gynecologist once and get examined and go for an ultrasound. With this the extent of the abscess can be identified.
-Culture and sensitivity of the pus can give the possible causative organism and its sensitivity to drugs.
-Systemic and local antibiotics, according to the report, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs can help in curing the symptoms.
-Please check for blood sugar levels once as diabetes can act as an underlying causative factor for infections.
-Avoid tight garments that can give pressure and friction on scar area.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
