What Is The Remedy For Thirst When On Diabetic Medication?

I am type2 diabetic and currently on oral medications (non insulin) however when I take my diabetic meds it causes me to be extremely thirsty and just about nothing quenches my thirst. However when I purposely DO NOT take my diabetic meds I do not have the same thirst levels as it is normal then . The current meds I am taking daily are glimepiride, metformin, simvastin, lisinopril and metoprolol,
Any suggestions?

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

There is a possibility that this is just how you feel. Increased thirst is usually a feature of high sugars. Most medicines do not cause the thirst to increase.
Still if you are having a feeling of increased thirst, I would suggest you meet your doctor to reduce the dose of metformin, or separate the metformin and glimipride (if you are on a combination drug).

Usually, metformin does not cause thirst. But in very very rare cases it may increase the thirst. This may increase if glimipride is taken at the same time.

However I have to say that changing a successful formula is not very advisable (if your sugars are well controlled). So I would suggest to any patient of mine, that if you have just thirst, step up the fluid intake.

And take medicines at a break as far as possible.

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above so i can be of help further. Best of luck.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.
