What Is The Interpretation Of My Nasopharyngeal Mass MRI Report?

I had an MRI for naspharyngeal mass. At the bottom of the report the radiologist wrote, Impressions: Cystic lesion which appears to be rising from the retropharyngeal spac demonstrating internal septations. This lesion is most suggestive of a lymphatic malformation. further correlation is suggested by direct examination.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Great question.
The MRI shows: Cystic lesion which appears to be rising from the retro-pharyngeal space demonstrating internal septations. This lesion is most suggestive of a lymphatic malformation. further correlation is suggested by direct examination.

The meaning is thus:
Cystic lesion means- the mass has a lining layer and is filled inside with fluid, appears like a balloon to be exact.
Retro means- behind, retropharyngeal meaning from the back portion of the pharynx.
Internal Septation- The fluid containing space is not a single, it has internal wall like structure which we say septations- that separated.
Hence suggestive of appearing from Lymphatic spaces
Direct examination helps to diagnose.

I hope this answers your query.
