What Is The Ideal Time Gap For Eating Food After Taking Levothyroxine?

How long do I need to wait to eat after taking levothyroxine? My doctor just increased my dose from 25mg to 50mgs and I feel light headed w/headache within 2hrs of taking meds which subsides after eating a little more & rest. Should I go back to the 25mgs or will I get used to this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You need to wait for at least one hour before breakfast / food. To get the best results Levothyroxine should be taken once daily with water on an empty stomach one hour before breakfast. It can also be taken 2 hours after food however remember it must be taken at the same time each day. Your doctor seems to have increased the dose based on the thyroid function tests so continue to take 50 micrograms per day.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
