Dear Madam,
Welcome to HCM,
That's a very nice question you have asked. You need to exactly know why you have got Diabetes and why you are taking tablets. Your Diabetes is mostly a result of a very strong family history. Diabetes has two components. one is reduced insulin production and second is insulin resistance. Insulin production is less as the beta cells are less in Diabetes patients so you need something to bring out the available insulin from the pancreas. This job is done by tablets like glimipride (GP1) next the insulin has to act better. Your body has to become more sensitive to insulin. This work is taken up by Metformin (Glycomet) So now you would have realized that your doctor has very intelligently put a combination to help you. I would concur with your doc's statement that tablets have to be taken for life time but would surely recommend a dose reduction. Dose reduction lies in your hands - You lose 10 % of your current body weight in the next 6 months, Follow a strict diet regimen and regularly exercise then there is every chance that dose reduction might be useful. In my practice i have seen that younger patients respond well to diet and exercise and some of them need only diet and exercise to control sugars. So its time to take out your running shoes and lose weight
