What Is The Cause And Treatment For Vaginal Yeast Infection?

Hi, I went to the obgyn last week bc I suspected I had a urinary tract infection. While I was there, dr said I had a yeast infection. This surprised me as I had no symptoms. I left the office with scripts for macrobid and terconazole which I started using immediately. I noticed discomfort during the first application, which got better the next day. I used the treatment for the mandated three days, ending on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, I noticed the exit of the cream was pink tinged. Today, Thursday morning, noticed spotting. I ve been spotting all day and am concerned. I am a 36 year old mom of two, with very regular periods coming every 24-26 days. My last period started 11/16 so this is about 5 or 6 days early. I am experiencing mild cramping as well. I m concerned that either I injured myself with the applicator somehow, or the effects of the cream is causing the bleeding or something worse. I am not on any prescription mess. When I did a search online, I did find forums of women who claimed they experience spotting after yeast infection treatment. But...there is no updates on why this is or how long it lasts. Fyi, I had a recent sonogram of pelvis in October (to rule out causes of lower back pain) and every thing came back fine. So what s causing this spotting and how worried should I be?

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello,
Yeast infection in itself can cause spotting from the vagina. It is also true that the applicator could have injured the vaginal tissues. If your doctor had a vaginal swab taken before giving you the prescription, the diagnosis should be obvious. Urinalysis also should be done. It is not true that medication can give rise to bleeding, though the associated hormone imbalances can be the cause. In the current scenario, you should report the matter to your consultant to plan further care. Hope this helps.
