What Is The Cause And Treatment For Severely Chapped Lips?

I have been battling with a condition going on with my lips since march of last year. It started as what I thought was a severe case of chapped lips. I thought all of my coughing from a virus I had picked up was what caused my lips to get red and irritated. Well... the next day, my lips were still inflamed and red... and they were excreting some fluid. It felt like they were actually sweating, but then my lips were crusty with a yellowish scabbiness later. It reminded my of what is over a cold sore during periods it is trying to heal. I learned quickly that chapstick and other lip balms are NOT good for it, and that the same thing I use on my cold sore will at least improve it over a few days... Abreva. I will stop using Abreva when it seems like the irritation is gone, because my lips get extremely dry. I can t tell if I am getting rid of it at all... it comes back so frequently, I feel like I am just improving the symptoms. Lately, it seems like I can only get a day or two of a break from it before it comes back. Lately, the irritation is spreading out to the skin around my mouth too... so I have been putting Abreva all over my lips and affected skin around my mouth. I have tried to read about others posting similar conditions... but they have offered nothing hopeful... just information on what does not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain chapped lips when becomes chronic there can be blistering and fluid discharge..

One more potent cause for the symptoms that you are experiencing can be Herpes infection causing Cold Sores which are clusters of fluid filled blisters and can cause scabbing, chapping and discharge..

There can also be Bacterial or Fungal infection or secondary to autoimmune disease..

You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and after a thorough clinical evaluation and proper laboratory investigations confirmation can be given and treatment can be planned accordingly..

As of now you should apply a thick coat of Petroleum jelly over your lips for maintaining lubrication while proper treatment can be done after final diagnosis..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
