Hello,
Lung opacities may be caused due to various reasons. Only if the opacities are associated with symptoms like severe cough, fever, then they are to be treated. The following are causes of opacities on chest X-ray:
* Pneumonia
* Pulmonary embolism:
infarction or intrapulmonary hemorrhage
* Neoplasm: alveolar cell carcinoma,
lymphoma (usually diffuse)
* Atelectasis: this is opacity that is accompanied by signs of volume loss
* Interstitial pulmonary edema
* Interstitial pneumonitis: viral
*
Tuberculosis, fungal, nocardia, varicella
*
Silicosis, Coal Worker’s lung,
sarcoidosis, eosinophilic granuloma
* Neoplastic (adenocarcinoma, thyroid)
Please don't get anxious by seeing the big list. They are all the possible causes I have mentioned. You need to consult a physician or a pulmonologist for further evaluation by in person clinical examination.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
