What Does The Endometrial Cells Present In Pap Test Indicate?

I just received a call that my last pap showed signs of endometrial cells. I am 53 and have a history of Thyroid cancer. I have been post menopausal for approx. 4 years. They want to do a biopsy now. I ve had them before with no findings. I had break through bleeding during year 2 and 3 of no periods so biopsy was done as a precaution. I really don t have time for all of this right now. What would cause the endometrial cells?

Hi,

The presence of endometrial cells in pap smear, particularly after recent bleeding or menstruation may be normal, as cells from the endometrial lining may float down to cervical canal, where these can be picked up by pap smear. The appearance of these cells may differ depending on the pathology.

Particularly after 50, these may be due to various abnormal pathologies. If on pap smear, the endometrial cells appear to be atypical, then to reach at a final diagnosis, endometrial biopsy is a primary requirement to confirm/rule out any malignancy etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
