What Does Opaque Maxillary Sinuses Mean?

Hi there,

I have been having sinus issues since I was around 10 (I'm 20 now) and literally no O.T.C./prescription meds or treatment plans work. My symptoms are relentless; a swollen/bloated/high-pressure feeling in my face, eyes wince shut, sneezing, watery runny nose, sometimes I can drag a very large, thick and usually clear wad of mucus from my nasal passage at the very back of my throat. At least one nostril is blocked at all times and I literally never have one completely clear nostril.

I finally got a CT scan earlier this month and the radiologist reported that the inside walls of both maxillary sinuses show "evidence of previous antrostomies". Both maxillary sinuses are completely opaque so there is no air flow at all.

I have never had surgery to erode sinus bone/tissue at all so I am wondering if you can please tell me for curiosity's sake if this indicates anything in particular. I unfortunately cannot see my E.N.T. specialist for another month and I am just after some information.

Kindest regards,

Megan

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain and co-relating with the CT Scan and subjective symptoms it seems that you are suffering from a severe form of sinus infection or sinusitis and the symptoms of thick drainage at the back of throat or post nasal drip along with blocked nose is indicative of thick mucous accumulation in the sinuses due to infection and as the sinuses drains through nose, there is blocked or congested feeling of the sinuses..
If no medication works you will have to consult an ENT SURGEON and get evaluated and a proper course of medications that will include antibiotics, anti inflammatory medications,, decongestants like Pseudoephadrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room..
You can also be advised decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline..
Do warm compresses around nostrils..

If there is no improvement then Endoscopic Sinus Surgery has to be done to drain of the sinuses and relieve the symptoms..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
