What Does It Mean By Placenta Grade 2 Maturity In An Anatomy Scan?

Hi. I am 22 weeks pregnant. I had the anatomy scan at 19w3d and all looks to be normal except for marginal placenta praevia- posterior and Placenta grad 2 maturity. I am less worried about the praevia as i will wait to see if my expanding uterus moves it away from my cervix but I am concerned about having a grade 2 maturity level when I m not that far along. I am 36 years old, no diabetes, good blood pressure, never smoked, ever, no drugs, healthy, etc... 1st pregnancy. Would you be able to tell me what this means and how to stop it from maturing so quickly? Thank you

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Maturity of placenta as the pregnancy advances is mentioned in grades. Grade 2 placenta at 19-20 weeks of pregnancy is not worrisome. Placental maturity reaches grade 2 in second trimester. The more important factor is that the fetal growth and the amount of fluid around the foetus is appropriate for the gestation age. If the placenta appears more mature than for that gestation age, then the causes are smoking, hypertension and autoimmune diseases like lupus erythematosus, and you have no such history. In that case, the uterine artery flow is assessed. There is no method to alter the placental maturity.
I would suggest you to consult an OBGYN specialist to get properly examined, investigated and treated accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

Dr Deepti Verma
