What Does Intermittent Pain From The Torso To The Thigh Indicate?

I have shooting intermittent pain on my left side from my mid torso to my mid thigh. I have not taken any medicine and it just began about 2 hours ago. What might I take or do to reduce the pain and what might the pain be due to? I have not exercised extensively and I am of average height and weight.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Intermittent shooting pain is commonly related to abnormal function of the nerves in the area. It can be temporary or permanent.

There are different possible causes:

(1) Trauma- the nerves that supply this area would arise from the lower and mid back. Any issues with the spine can cause a problem example, arthritis
(2) Diabetes
(3) Liver and kidney disease
(4) Thyroid disease
(5) Side effect of medication
(6) Autoimmune Disease example, RA or lupus
(7) Exposure to toxins
(8) Low Vitamin B12 or folate levels
(9) Abnormal vitamin B6 levels

You monitor unless it is severe. If it persists or worsens, then you should be seen by your provider and get assessed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
