What Does Extra Piece Of Skin Across Vaginal Opening Indicate?

I have an extra piece of skin across my vaginal opening. It causes a separation in the open resulting in a hole on either side of the skin. It only hurts when I try to pull out my tampon and it get stuck under the skin and expands out of the other hole. Is this common and how easy/difficult is it to be removed?

Hi,

According to your description the extra tissue you mention could be a vaginal septum. Vaginal septum can be seen in some women due to defect in the fusion of Mullerian system. It can be either transfer or vertical. It may cause symptoms in some women and may not cause any symptoms in others.

Depending on the symptoms, position and thickness of the septum treatment can be planned. Asymptomatic women may not need any treatment. But, as you are having problem during menstruation, better to consult your gynecologist once, get examined and undergo investigations like ultrasound, if needed MRI.

With this work up the possible position, length and thickness of the septum can be identified and treatment can be planned accordingly. If you want permanent solution you may need to get the septum removed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
