What Does Cough Along With Nausea And Fever Indicate?

Is it possible to have a relapse of the flu? I had the flu about two weeks ago. It was relatively mild, and my terrible dry cough was starting to ease up. However, I got it again three days ago- fever was a bit worse this time, and I did vomit twice (although i think that was due more to the fact that I was eating hardly anything and cough drops are quite nauseating after a while haha). My symptoms are lessening now, but I m wondering if I should go to the doctor to really knock this thing out.

Hello,

Short answer: Yes, it is possible to have a relapse of flu.

Detailed answer: Viruses that cause flu-like symptoms are literally hundreds. This means that apart from influenza viruses, there are other ones affecting the respiratory system in humans, including respiratory syncytial virus, adenoviruses, rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, et cetera.

A person can be infected with either of these viruses consecutively, but we label all of these into the common "influenza" term as their signs and symptoms are almost the same. In your case, it is possible that you have been exposed to one of these viruses and then you encountered another type of virus causing the disease to return again.

My recommendation is: if your symptoms are lessening or improving definitively, then you do not need to go to your doctor but keep up the general care about yourself: keeping warm, drinking lots of liquids, eating well, and taking anti-fever drugs (paracetamol, ibuprofen) if the fever is 37-38 Celsius degrees.

The cough caused by these viruses is rather prolonged and therefore you need not to worry. But if the cough gets more severe and fever increases beyond 38.5-39 degrees Celsius and persists, then you probably need to see your doctor for further care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
