What Does Blood Platelet Count Close To Zero Indicate?

I have currently got a platelet count of 0, I am undergoing treatment, a blood infusion! Over the weekend I have been bleeding irregularly, for e.g. coughing up blood, nose bleeds and a little blood from the ear! I have had plenty of blood tests and so far the only evidence seems to be a platelet count of 0, I am now concerned it could be more than this, or am I worrying for no reason? Regards!

Hi,

Any count of platelets below 150,000 is thrombocytopenia. A count between 100,000-1,50,000 is mild thrombocytopenia, where as between 30,000-100,000 moderate and below 30,000 it is severe thrombocytopenia. In some cases the platelet count may be as low as near zero. In such cases, the risks of uncontrolled bleeding is there which may be fatal also.

The reasons of low platelet count may be bone marrow disorders like leukemia, some immune system disorder, some medicines and even some infections. You are very much right, because thrombocytopenia is one of the symptoms of some body disease or side effect of some medicines or food etc. Therefore, apart from the symptomatic conservative treatment of low platelet count, a specific cause of thrombocytopenia should be investigated for and if possible, the treatment done accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
