What Does A Tiny Scab At The Base Of The Skull Indicate?

Hi, my name is Teresa and for the last 1-2years I ve had a tiny, what feels like a scab right at the base of my skull on the back right side of my neck. In that indention spot. It has never hurt at all, has been itchy very mildly pretty regularly though, which is how I ve been aware of its existence at all. However, last night I was scratching that mild itch and my newly filed fingernail caught the tiny little scab, at least that s what I assume it was, and tore it off accidentally. It hurt so intensely I could not believe or understand it. I chalked it up to whatever, and went to bed. When I woke up today, my head was almost stuck to my pillow with a very large scab that had formed over the sore spot, at least 10 times larger than the scab had been, probably even larger than that, and when I reached back there to feel the thing, it was even more sore and there was greenish blood oozing out of iteven through and around this very large scab. Pulled the scab off slowly, because of the intense pain and because it was very tightly attached to my scalp. Once off I investigated with only my sense of touch of course (because I haven t been able to look at it in spite of how hard I ve tried to find a way to do so) and the sore now feels like a half an inch elongated cut, or slit, or whatever and no longer like a single roundish bump or scab at all, and I ve never in all my years felt a cut or slit back there at all???? I m so very purplexed, and worse yet, my head keep aching and stinging at the site itself, and the pain and irritation have been expanding out to where I right now hurt all the way around to the back of my ears on both sides, there s quite a bit of a lump and of course plenty of soreness at the site and all around it, to where it hurts something aweful to try and lean my head back against the small of my neck in any way, sitting standing, driving, exercising, walking, SLEEPING, etc. What on earth do you think this thing may be or what should I do to get rid of it either way? I would greatly appreciate any information I could get, I m a tad concerned that if I go to bed tonight I ll be aching and full of infection and pain worse than last time, or that I ll be in pain further down into my chest in the morning. Yikes!please help! Thank You.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The tiny scab sounds to be more of a sebaceous cyst type soft tissue lesion, however, if you provide me with a close photo picture of the same in a follow-up conversation, it would be better to guide further precisely.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
