What Does AST(SGOT) Of 45 U/L And SGPT (ALT) Of 65 U/L Indicate?

Hi doc, I am have an occasional chest pain, first i ignore it then it became frequent, so i went to the hospital, i had ecg, cardiac enzyme tests, which are all normal, but cholesterol were high, they advised a healthy diet, then i got the liver AST(SGOT) - 45 U/L and 65 U/L for SGPT (ALT) which both have <31 results as normal. i just got the result tonight, and my doctor will be out for a week, but i just cant sleep with this thing. what does this mean, ive read somewhere, higher ALT means inflammation of the liver. now, should this be an alarming thing, how will i treat this ALT? thanks

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Increased SGPT indicates liver injury.
Increase in SGPT may be due to many reasons like hepatitis, alcohol intake, altered lipid profile, medicines, auto immune causes etc.
In your case, increased SGPT may be related to altered lipid profile as you have increased cholesterol level.

You need few more investigations like random blood sugar(RBS),renal function test(RFT),GGT level, viral markers, complete liver function test, urine RE/ME.

You should avoid red meat and high fat milk products.
You should avoid fried and junk food and avoid alcohol completely.

Medicines should be prescribed after complete investigations.
I suggest my patients to take tablet ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg twice daily after food for three months. This help in regeneration of liver cells.
I also suggest to take tablet atorvastatin 10 mg single tablet at night after dinner. This will control increased cholesterol level.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.

Take Care
