What Do Swollen Tonsils Indicate?

I had strep throat a couple weeks ago, was on antibiotics for five days, it felt better but my tonsils were still swollen though. Now my throat hurts again there is a dark red vein on my right tonsil, and I can barely eat/swallow anything, should I be concerned? Could it be strep again? Should I go get it checked out?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You have symptoms of swollen tonsils which seems to be due to bacterial infection leading to tonsillitis.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you do warm saline gargles on daily basis. You should take antibiotic Amoxicillin for 5 days in combination with anti-inflammatory medication. This does not seem to be strep throat again.

Visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. You should get throat swab test done and go for blood tests as well and start treatment after proper prescription. Avoid oily, sharp food and cold beverages. Drink plenty of fluids.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
