What Do Swelling And Pain On The Base Of The Neck Indicate?

Hi, I noticed this evening while in the shower that I have a swollen and very sore area at the base of my neck It almost feels like a swollen gland? It is painful to the touch and noticed while washing my hair. I have an ice pack on the back of my neck. Any cause for concern? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The swelling you have at the base of neck could be:
- A lymph node enlarged in respond e to some lesion in scalp, and neck region.
- It can be an enlarged, infected and inflamed hair root.

You would need a course of antibiotic with anti-inflammatory medicine over the counter. See your family physician for specific prescription.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
