What Do Red Rashes On The Ankles Indicate?

I have a red rash on both ankles and spreading a little up the back of my legs. I wear diabetic socks (for comfort) because I work on my feet most of the day. The rash is bright red but does not turt or burn or itch. Cortisone cream does seem to help the rash lessen but I m wondering if their might be an underlying cause. There has been no changes in laundry products.

as I see chances are there that it might be a fungal rash or a plane allergic rash due to the stockings.Since we are getting mild temporary relief with the topical steroidal cream,let us first change or alter the socks and simultaneously add an anti fungal powder or cream.
Need less to say that if it is a fungal infection ,we need to take much care in segregating and treating our daily wear and clothing as well.
Do get the rash clinically examined if it persists.
