What Do Pain And Stiffness In The Neck Along With Fever Indicate?

Hi, I am a 56 year, white female. Today is the 3rd day I have had continuos fever between 100.0 to 101.7. I have a stiff, painful neck with shocking like pains in my head. My throat is sore, chest feels a little heavy, and my entire body aches. I saw a doctor this afternoon, who gave me no diagnosis, no helpful information, and basically said go home, document your fever and symptoms daily, then contact your family doctor. I am in a lot of discomfort and scared. Don t know what to do.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

By your history and description, possibility of severe viral fever is more. But blood reports like CBC (complete blood count), CRP (C reactive protein) should be done to rule out bacterial infection. Usual treatment for viral infection is plenty of fluids orally, paracetamol or acetaminophen tablets, cold sponging etc. But if blood pressure is getting low or fever spikes are not controlled then you need hospitalization. So first get done blood reports.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
