What Do Extreme Fatigue, Disorientation And Lack Of Control Over Bowels Suggest?

My Dad 72 y/o was admitted to the hospital today. He s a life long heavy smoker and drinker. He had a quintuple bypass in 2003. He was extremely fatigued, disoriented (night/day) unable to walk well (falling) and most alarming had no control over his bowels. He s currently hospitalized w/IV - 900 cc output urine and he ate 90% of his dinner. At the present time he is sleeping which is what he s been most of the day since entering the hospital.

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Lack of control over bowel movements is seen in constipation with stool impaction leading to overflow incontinence mostly seen in elderly people. Diarrhea is seen in Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, or neurological problems (like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, dementia or stroke).

Fatigue, disorientation and lack of control over bowel movements may be due to stroke or dementia. Few investigations like MRI brain and spinal cord, complete blood picture may be necessary for diagnosis. As he got admitted to hospital, everything will be taken care of.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
