What Could The Pulsating Sensation In Ears Be?

I am female, 67 and weigh 12 stone. I have started to get a throbbing-pulsating in my left ear and am a little tender below the ear behind my jaw. It started a week ago and dissappeared, but it came back again yesterday and has been off & on intermittantly all day. There is no pain, though my balance isn t brilliant.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a female of 67 having throbbing pulsating sensation in left ear, little tender below ear, since a week, disappeared but came back again, no pain but balance is not brilliant.
The commonest cause can think about are one of the following:
Inflammation of the middle ear with fluid accumulation called otitis media.
Glomus Jugalare is another condition and is serious and difficult to treat.
Hence I would advise you hte following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon as soon as possible so that you can have proper examination of Ears, nose and throat, have endoscopy of ear and if required would be sent for CT scan of the mastoids so that an appropriate additional diagnosis can be made.
If the cause is fluid then a course of an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medicine and antihistamine will help to resolve over 3 weeks. Oral steroid if you are not diabetic can help early resolution.
But if the cause is glomus jugulare then surgery is needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
