Three weeks ago I started to feel really weak and had flu like symptoms together with a pain through my left shoulder to my chest and slight numbness in my left arm. My head also felt congested. A docotr told me it was flu and told me to take nurofen which i did. Two days later my whole face , tongue and throat was swolen. I was put on a course of cortisone and antihystimine which I finished last week. I have been feelinf fine since. Last nigh I started to vomit overnight and the same symptoms are happening. What could this be?

Hi,

Recurring flu-like symptoms after taking Nurofen (ibuprofen) may not necessarily indicate a problem related to the medication itself. However, the symptoms you describe, including pain in your left shoulder and chest, numbness in your left arm, congestion, and swelling of your face, tongue, and throat, suggest that you may have had an allergic reaction to Nurofen.

An allergic reaction can occur when the body's immune system overreacts to a foreign substance, such as a medication or food. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe, with severe reactions potentially causing anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening emergency.

The fact that you were put on a course of cortisone and antihistamines suggests that your doctor suspected an allergic reaction to the Nurofen. The symptoms you experienced after finishing the course of medication could be a recurrence of the allergic reaction, or they could be a separate illness or condition.

You must seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Chest pain or tightness
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Severe headache
- Severe nausea or vomiting
- High fever

These symptoms could indicate a severe allergic reaction or a serious underlying medical condition that requires prompt treatment.

In general, if you experience recurring symptoms of the flu, it's important to see your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions or infections that could be causing your symptoms. Your doctor may recommend further tests or refer you to a specialist for further evaluation.

It's also important to follow the dosage instructions on any medications you take and to be aware of potential side effects or interactions with other medications. If you have a history of allergies or have had an allergic reaction to a medication in the past, be sure to inform your doctor before taking any new medications.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
