What Could Random Bald Red Patches Signify Along With Irritated And Peeling Skin On Armpit?

About 2 weeks ago my
Husband had a lump in his armpit. He stopped using deodorant for a few days and kept it clean, and the lump got smaller and went away. Today when he was getting a hair cut we noticed he has a random bald patch that is red, smooth, and completely void of hair. This came up suddenly and there was no prior trauma to the area. After a shower tonight he noticed that both of have armpits are very
Irritated and the skin is peeling. He said that they are very sore. I'm not sure what to think of all these strange symptoms. He is under a lot of stress right now and just started counseling for the first time, so I am wondering if that is all this is. He is of average weight and we are relatively healthy. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM.

I would keep a possibility of Intertrigo (inflammation of body folds e.f groin, axilla, inframammary folds). Intertrigo happens more commonly in hot, humid weather conditions because the moisture gets trapped in between body folds and thus the skin gets macerated, weak and thus irritated due to rubbing (while walking). Candida gets superimposed often.

I guess the lump was the result of bacterial infection of the hair follicles(folliculitis). Axilla is a common site for folliculitis because of sweat, friction. Shaving is a risk factor for developing folliculitis!! so it should be avoided.

If i was your treating doctor i wpuld have asked you to apply a topical antifungal cream e. g clotrimazole twice daily for 2-4 weeks.

Using an antifungal dusting powder regularly after intertrigo resolves will help prevent recurrence.

take care
