What Could Have Caused Dull Hearing After Ear Pain?
my teen has been complaining of ear pain and dull hearing in rt ear for 1 week. she has had a summer cold and went swimming, which I thought could have been swimmer's ear. However, the pain is gone, no fever; but the hearing is still dull and she has ringing. there has not been any drainage either. not sure what to do next for her?
As an ENT specialist, I suspect middle ear effusion. Middle ear effusion is a condition due to eustachian tube blockage due to which there will alteration of pressure in the middle ear and collection of sterile fluid. It usually presents as 1) Blocked ears 2) Mildly decreased hearing 3) Ringing sensation (tinnitus) On examination 1) Tympanic membrane (layer of membrane separates the external ear from the middle ear) looks dull and lusterless 2) Absent cone of light of tympanic membrane 3) Retraction of the tympanic membrane 4) Presence of fluid behind the tympanic membrane Investigation like 1) Otoendoscopy 2) Audiometry 3) Impedance Audiometry If I am your treating doctor I will examine and investigations and prescribe oxymetazoline nose drops and steam inhalation. I would recommend you to see ENT specialist and get your ears checked.
