What Could Be The Reason For Bruised Foot With X-rays Showing Normal Condition?

My girlfriend stood up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom and not realizing her foot was asleep stepped on wrong and now, four days later the entire top of her foot is bruised. It started as a pool ball size bruise and has spread across her entire foot. She had xrays done the day after she hurt it and the doctor didn't know what was wrong. What could the problem possibly be?

Hello, if x ray is normal after injury and there is bruise, than it means there is no fracture and it may be soft tissue injury only. This can be very painful and associated with swelling and bruise. What she need to do is that, give rest to foot, ice fomentation, can use compression bendages and elevate foot during rest of at the time of sleep. In all acute injury, hot fomentation should be avoided as it increase swelling.
But MRI can be better to detect soft tissue injury. But only after physical exam , one may be able to to advice this.
