What Could A Bitemark On Earlobe With Red Ring And Dry Skin Around It Indicate?

Hi I am in Zimbabwe, Africa visiting from California so all of the bites that I am receiving are foreign. I have a bite on my earlobe (just a bit above where the common ear piercing would be) There is a red ring around the bite. The bite was originally very painful (stinging) when it occurred last week - since the red ring and dry skin around the red ring is the only the that persists. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on your symptoms, the red ring and dry skin can be caused by insect bite and subsequent allergic reaction. The site of the ring should be examined closely to find any sting of the insect and should be removed. Antihistamines and hydrocortisone injection should be taken to avoid any hypersensitivity reactions. Any history of fever, persistent itching, throat pain, difficulty in swallowing and breathlessness should be treated immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
