What Complications Could Arise Other Than UTI S For The Duplex Of Kidney?

4 month old baby girl diagnosis Duplex of the left kidney. At 7 months old we rushed to hospital with fever and after Blood, urine, e-ray,and ultrasound tests we were diagnosed with a UTI. The ultrasound was foggy so a month later after infection subsided we had another ultrasound which shows Left Kidney Duplex. She has been on Septra since the first hospital visit. We are now being referred AGAIN by my family doctor for further testing. She hasnt had any other episodes and seems like she is thriving as well as any other healthy baby. I guess my question is a). In clear terms, what could I expect as far as any complications or other problems that could arise other than future UTI s. And, will she ALWAYS have to be on an antibiotic???

Hi... I have just read through your query. Coming to your questions directly -
1. Duplex system means I understand that it is bifid collecting dust or duplex of renal pelvis which could be a normal finding in many kids. We need to worry we only if there is vesico ureteric Reflux (VUR). In other terms the urine which has to come down from the Kidneys might sometimes revert back and flow up wards from the urinary bladder to the Kidneys. This requires daily antibiotic therapy, but duplex system of the renal pelvis does not require antibiotics.

2. If VUR are found out after doing micturating cystourethrogram (MCU) then the kid needs to be on daily antibiotics for at least 2 years of age. If MCU test is normal then antibiotics can be stopped immediately.
