What Causes Weird Sounds From Throat?

I sometimes have a noise that comes from my throat, sometimes I can stop it, other times it is present with every breath. I cough a lot and have had 2 incidents of choking, needing the Heimlich maneuver, although I had no food or drink. Both times, it helped and I could breathe again. It s like my throat closes. I know I need to see a doctor about it but would like your opinion as well. Thank you. Karen Roberts

Hi,

It is difficult to diagnose the cause of the symptoms you are describing without a physical examination and additional information about your medical history.

However, some potential causes of strange noises or sensations in the throat and episodes of choking or difficulty breathing could include:
* Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): A condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus and irritates the lining, causing heartburn, coughing, and other symptoms.
* Laryngospasm: A sudden, involuntary spasm of the vocal cords that can cause a choking sensation or difficulty breathing.
* Vocal cord dysfunction: A condition in which the vocal cords close instead of opening during breathing, causing wheezing, shortness of breath, and other symptoms.
* Obstructive sleep apnea: A sleep disorder in which the airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing episodes of snoring, gasping, and choking.
* Other respiratory or neurological conditions: Various respiratory and neurological conditions can cause strange noises or sensations in the throat, choking, or difficulty breathing.

Your doctor may refer you to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or another specialist as needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
