What Causes Weight Gain Post Steroid Shots For Keflex Drug Reaction?

I had a steroid shot mid August for drug reaction to Keflex. Then in Sept i got poison ivy and another steroid shot. I feel horrible, have gained 20 pounds. I already take fluoxedine for depression, but am dealing with that issue even more now. Feel like my thyroid could be off? Its been 6 months since the last shot. Will this pass any time soon?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello. 2 steroid shots 6 months back are unlikely to have long lasting effects, even though long-term steroid intake is known to cause weight gain. The anti-depressant you are on also can cause weight gain, though it is seen only in some of the people. You are right in thinking about a thyroid disorder, and it may well lead to the cause of your weight gain if it abnormal. Good news if hypothyroidism can be very well controlled by medicines. Please get your TSH and free T4 done. If it is normal, we may have to look for other causes. Hope this helps.
