What Causes Vaginal Discharge Before The Period?

My daughter 10 just came from school and said mom we have to talk. She mentioned she had cramps and since she never has had her period before I went through the process of getting the sanitary supplies out while I told her to sit on the toilet so we could check. Well, when I asked her does she need a pad she said no. So, I said ok let me check you out to make sure and her panties were drenched in what I thought was a urination accident she said it was not, and I smelled her pants and the liquid had no pee smell what could this be. Does this happen before a period starts. Is this normal What should I tell her? Please help!!

OB and GYN Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

About 6 months to 1 year before a girl gets her first period, her body may start to make vaginal discharge. This is normal and due to changing hormone levels. The discharge helps keep the vagina healthy. Normal vaginal discharge can have a texture that's anywhere from thin and slightly sticky to thick and gooey.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Naira Jahangir, OB and GYN Specialist
