What Causes Vaginal Bleeding With Clots After Having Intercourse?

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and a half. The first year of our relationship had been a long distance relationship. I ve been on birth control for a little over a year. Over the last 5 months living together I ve noticed I m more dry with my own self lubrication, irritated, burning, itchy and very sore after inter course. I then had a yeast infection which I took care of. Although the burning and itching had gone away I now, over the past few weeks noticed I bleed after intercourse and most recently had blood clots! But there was hardly any blood just super dry clots that came out. Also should mention I went to the OBGYN 2 weeks ago and he gave me a pill because he thought I still had a yeast infection. He said to wait a few days before sex and we did. Nothing else was out of the ordinary so I have no idea what it could be that s causing the clots and bleeding.

Hi,

The reasons for bleeding after intercourse are often due to benign conditions like cervical polyp, cervicitis (infection of the neck of the womb) cervical ectropion (epithelium lining cervical canal protrudes out a bit) vaginal atrophy, foreign body etc.

Sometimes, it is due to causes of concern like precancerous lesion of the cervix or cervical / vaginal cancer. Since you have been examined by a doctor and also had a colposcopy, most of the benign causes are obviously excluded.

Do you have regular cycles? Do you have unprovoked bleeding in between cycles? Do you have any bleeding disorders? Are you on blood thinning medications?

Are you on oral contraceptive pills? In this case sometimes, there is cervical ectropion due to estrogen content in pill. This epithelium is delicate. It can be injured during intercourse causing bleeding.

Though rare, it is important to exclude precancerous / cancer lesions by biopsy. Let us wait for the result.

Please note that in more than 50% of cases where no cause will be identified after all these investigations. In such a scenario the bleeding usually resolves in a few months' time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
