What Causes Upper Stomach Pain And Constipation Despite Taking Tums?

My daughter who is 23 yrs old (and in New Zealand now) has the following issues: upper stomach ache, back pain directly behind the stomach pain. This morning she was burping a lot but could not fart or poop. She went to the store (at about 8 am Pacific Time) and got constipation medicine but threw it up about an hour later. Now she pooped once just a little, feels very bloated, and the pain comes and goes. She is generally healthy. This happened once before in June of this year and at that time she took Tums and a laxative. Her boyfriend is at the store now and is going to talk to the pharmacy and hopefully get a laxative or something. Any ideas? She has not eaten anything strange or unusual recently.

Hello,

The pain abdomen is likely related to the constipation she is experiencing now. It can be due to many reasons mostly its related to food habits, more protein in diet and less fibers can cause constipation.

Whenever a patient comes to me with pain abdomen (extreme and continuous), with relevant history and doing physical examination I suggest her to get an ultrasound abdomen done and advice her to take oral suspension of laxative that helps softening of stool. In your daughter’s case if the pain is extreme and unbearable then going to ER is the best thing. Otherwise (laxative) oral suspension like Duphalac’s appropriate dosage can be taken with physician’s advice for loosening of stools to relieve the symptoms. Even after this there is no change in symptoms then its better to see a doctor, if needed she will be suggested to take enema and it will definitely help.

I would suggest her to include food that contains more fibers in her diet.

Hope this helps, feel free to contact for any queries.
