What Causes Unresolved Inner Ear Pain On Medication?

I've been to the doctors office three times this last month for ear infection- took amoxicillin the first time round, then was prescribed azithromiacin*, and have yet to feel relief from inner ear pain- I'm concerned because the doc keeps giving me narcotic pain meds to help but it's been three weeks! Whats wrong? Feel pain, "cloggedness", and cant hear much in that ear...I've researched perforated eardrum and think that's what I have. The doc hasn't mentioned much other than "finish antibiotic course" and have tried vicodine and percocet so I just don't want the risk of dependence or withdrawal. what should I tell my doctor to get her attention??? Feels like she doesn't trust that I know my body better than her, and just because Im not a doctor doesn't mean I don't have basic medical knowledge and terms...

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you have pain in ear along with clogged feeling can be due to infection and blocked Eustachian tube. There can be fluid behind the eardrum that can cause clogged feeling and difficulty in hearing. Also long term ear infection can cause perforation of the eardrum and it needs to be checked. You should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and an Otoscopy of ear can be done for confirmation of the diagnosis. If there is fluid in the ear and doesn't resolve with antibiotics then you can be advised surgical drainage of the ears along with placement of ear tubes followed by antibiotics and painkillers and decongestant nasal drops. You should avoid exposure of ears to moisture and also evoid exposure to loud sounds.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
