What Causes Unpleasant Nasal Smell Post Sinus Surgery?

I have a foul odor on the same side of my nose as the sinus lift after surgery. It has been a week, have have been in to see the surgeon that performed my surgery twice. He says may just be the antibiotics. It smells like something rotten. I have brown drainage, that taste awful, usually comes after I sniffle slightly as I am trying to avoid all the things that we are not supposed to do after this type of surgery, blow nose, sneeze, and so on. I can just do something so simple as lean forward to put on shoes and the smell can be sickening. It has only been 8 days after my surgery.... Should I be concerned?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of unpleasant nasal smell post sinus surgery. Well this not an uncommon thing to have fouls smell and bad taste after the sinus surgery. There can be many reasons for this. It takes 5-6 month for healing after surgery and 3-4 months to retain its normal functions. As long as you do not get fever it is totally normal .

Nasal irrigation and saline nasal spray play important role during this period, which prevent the recurring of infection and bad taste and foul smell. Sometimes biofilm formation can cause such problems. If foul smell persist for longer time , get worse or there is fever then consult your ENT surgeon (ear, nose ,throat) for proper examination .

Doctor may perform endoscopic examination to check what's wrong.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
